I caught a bug - I like to race

Hyrox Pic

This year I’ve done a Marathon and an Olympic-distance Triathlon. In 2 months, Oct 4th, I’m going to also compete at the Toronto HYROX event. Why? Because I’m a hybrid rockstar 😂😂.

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a race that alternates between running 1 km and completing one of 8 functional exercises. They are:

  1. 1,000 m Ski Erg
  2. 50 m Sled Push (152 kg)
  3. 50 m Sled Pull (103 kg)
  4. 80 m Burpee Broad Jumps
  5. 1,000 m Row
  6. 200 m Farmers Carry (24 kg / hand)
  7. 100 m Sandbag Lunges (20 kg)
  8. 100 Wall Balls (6 kg, 9 ft target)

My Goals

I have a feeling I’ll be a lot more successful in this race relative to my age compared to my previous races this year. It’s a shorter race and I have a solid running foundation and athleticism. I want to finish in the 90th percentile, and ultimately I’ll be happy with a finish ± 3 mins of 1:17.

To achieve this, I’m aiming to run ~4:20 km/h. My strategy is to save my legs for the burpee broad jumps to ensure my quads don’t explode when it comes to the 1,000 m row.

My main concern with this race is managing my lactic acid. Given this race isn’t as long as a Marathon or triathlon, I’m less nervous. However, I’ve suffered cramping in back-to-back races which ultimately impacted my ability to finish strong.

Finish Strong.

Training

Given my triathlon completion, I’m going to reduce the amount of time I’m in the pool and do more cycling.

I’ll be doing strengthening 3× a week at F45, and perhaps some additional sessions between One Academy and Resilience Fitness. These businesses offer more niche Hyrox training for the big race day.

For running, I’ll be increasing my volume to 50 km / week and will be doing a speed workout on Tuesdays with the local Turtle run club. I trained with them leading up to my triathlon, and it enabled me to push through those tougher and harder workouts to improve my speed.

Ultimately, it’s about consistent training. Since completing my triathlon, I have been on a mini exercise break and off my routine. I’ll be back to my consistent self and prove it on Strava and prove it on race day.

加油! Stay tuned for more updates on my Hyrox results!
